THINGS TO DO IN MALLORCA – ELS CALDERERS

The history of the Els Calderers estate can be traced back to the year 1285 when the manor is mentioned in historic records for the first time as belonging to the Calderers family.  In the 18th century the noble family bought the entire estate.  The present imposing main building was probaby built from 1750 on and continuously expanded until the early 19th century.

The estate of Els Calderers lies at the foot of the Hermita de Bonany, in the village of Sant Joan.

Access is from the main road that links the capital, Palma, with Manacor (exit and sign at kilometre mark 37).

The main building is a typical example of a Majorcan rural villa.  It is a three-storied building with a plain facade and an arched doorway.  The building, which was rebuilt several times during the 18th and 19th centuries, possesses a pretty interior courtyard which, in Majorcan is called “sa clastra”.

The Bodega with its old wine presses and large wine barrels.

The Kitchen, where you can see the traditional cooking utensils of the era and wall tiles (originating from the early 20th century), was in daily use until 1994.

The main Dining Room with a large table stylishly set for 18 people.

Music Room, with a piano dating from the beginning of the 19th century. The mannequin at the piano wears an original Majorcan silk dress.

The lady’s dressing room has an attractive washstand.  A door leads from this room to the  Bedroom with a tester bed.

The Granary, is a large hall supported by three slim columns.  Here various types of fruit, pulses and cereals from the estate, such as chickpeas, horsebeans, beans, almonds, corn, etc. were stored.  You can also see various traditional agricultural tools and machinery.

On the ground floor, specialities of the house, made according to Majorcan tradition, are offered for sale to visitors.  Among them are “sobrasada”, wine, marmalade and honey.
